Washa Mikael Rock-Hewn Church

Few visitors realize Addis has its own rock-hewn church: Washa Mikael, a semi-monolithic sanctuary cut into the Yeka hills, locally attributed to the 4th century though possibly medieval. Roofless and ruinous, it's an atmospheric, crowd-free taste of Ethiopia's famous rock churches without leaving the city.
☀️ Local tip
Go in dry season (Nov-May) — the interior floods during the rains. The path is tricky to find and has had mugging reports: take a local guide and don't go alone.
